Motorsport sits at the heart of Road and Race. It’s where our standards were forged – and why our approach to vehicle preparation, repair and restoration is so exacting.
Road and Race founder John Bradshaw began racing in the late 1970s, competing in the National Modsports Championship with modified Lotus Elan and Lotus Europa models. John didn’t just race these cars – he designed, modified and built them in his garage alongside his friend John Raffo – progressing from Modsports to Special GTs, including a Cosworth BDG-engined Lotus Europa.
That engineering-led journey culminated in a single-seat Monoposto car, which John drove to victory in the National Monoposto Championship in 1987. Following requests from fellow competitors to prepare and set up their cars, Road and Race Restorations Ltd was formed in 1988.
As the business grew into classic car restoration, John’s racing paused – until 2003, when he returned to competition in a 1976 Argo JM1 Formula 3 car, racing with the Historic Car Club and Classic Formula 3.
In 2006, John’s son, Tom, began racing and quickly established himself as a standout talent. After just one season of karting aged 15, Tom entered Formula Ford at age 16 and won the Pre-90 Formula Ford Championship, setting new lap records and taking the title with 10 wins from 13 starts.
Tom went on to compete in Formula Palmer Audi, where he scored the most wins of any driver in the history of the series. In 2008, he finished college and worked in the family business alongside building his reputation in professional motorsport.
A major breakthrough followed in 2009, when Tom was selected as Porsche GB’s first-ever junior driver, competing in the Carrera Cup and regularly running in the top three of the professional class for a season and a half.
Tom moved on to race for Porsche GB’s Classic Racing team in their 2.0-litre 911, alongside Richard Attwood and Derek Bell. He also won the Silverstone Classic and the European Historic Masters Sports Car Championship in the Road and Race-run Chevron B19.
More recently Tom has moved back into more modern machinery as well as combining some historic racing. 2024 and 2025 saw Tom racing in the ultra-competitive Porsche Sprint Challenge GB in a Cayman GT4RS Clubsport. Tom won the championship outright in 2025, scoring the most wins in the history of the series. As well as winning both races at the Silverstone Classic in a 1982 Mclaren F1 MP4.
