At Road & Race Restorations, we understand that the future of faster, more agile and more luxurious performance cars is built upon the engineering achievements of the past. Few models embody this lineage more profoundly than the Porsche 924 Carrera GTP – a rare, factory-owned race car that laid the foundations for generations of Porsche innovation.

A British Icon: The Porsche 924 Carrera GTP

Born from passion and engineered for competition, the Porsche 924 Carrera GTP holds a unique place in motorsport history. Launched in 1976 and the only Porsche factory-owned race car to have ever carried the Union Jack, the 924 sparked pride throughout the whole of Great Britain.

After competing in the Porsche 924 Racing Championship in 1978, the GTP went on to surpass all expectations at the 1980 24 Hours of Le Mans. Driven by Tony Dron and Andy Rouse, the 924 delivered a performance that cemented its legacy and created memories still treasured more than four decades later.

Rediscovering a Legend

In 2016, the 40th anniversary of the Porsche 924’s launch, the decision was made to revive this sleeping beauty. Discovered in a German museum, far from its former glory, the car was carefully transported back to Britain for a full, sympathetic restoration.

For the first time in decades, the 924 GTP returned to British soil. Porsche Centres Swindon, Hatfield, Leeds and Glasgow, together with Road & Race Restorations, were entrusted with a six-month, factory-standard restoration.

A Restoration Driven by Passion

Tracking down the bespoke components required to return the 924 GTP to its original specification was no small undertaking. When the original engine was located, John Bradshaw, and indeed the entire team, were elated. What followed was months of meticulous craftsmanship, technical precision and unwavering dedication.

A Moment in Motorsport History

Once complete, the Porsche 924 Carrera GTP was unveiled at Silverstone — just as it once arrived at Le Mans. It captivated enthusiasts old and new, reminding the motorsport world of its remarkable journey and enduring significance.

It may not have been the work of a moment, but the result was a moment in history: a restoration that revived a legend and ensured its story will continue to inspire for generations to come.
